You know why they call it the American dream? Because you have to be asleep to believe it. Why do you seem not to care? Is it because you’re asleep or because you’re all sheep?

Wake up America and shake off the gangsters who think they own you. You are not Republicans. You are not Democrats. You are not Independents.

YOU ARE AMERICANS.

Or is it too late already?

You must have heard of the rotten apple fairy tale. You know how it goes. It’s the standard establishment explanation for corruption or incompetence: He/she’s a rotten apple in an otherwise clean barrel. According to this theory, rotten apples are either weak assholes in the guise of human beings who have slipped through organisational screening processes and succumbed to the temptations inherent in positions of power, or deviant individuals who continue their deviance in an environment that gives them ample opportunity so to do.

Police departments, governments and the military tend to use the rotten apple theory, or some variation of it, to minimize public backlash after every exposed atrocity or act of corruption or incompetence.

Another approach is the occupational socialization explanation, the polar opposite of rotten apple theory — rotten barrel theory, if you will. According to this view, the very structure of front-line agencies of the state provides ample opportunity to learn the entrenched patterns of deviant power-based conduct that have been passed down through generations.

A functional explanation may be closer to the truth: corruption and institutionalised barbarism may be inherent in society’s attempts to enforce unenforceable laws and undesirable hegemonies.

The footage below pertains to the current US adventure in Iraq but it could, mutatis mutandis, be about Vietnam, Somalia, or the war against the American people at home.

‘The problem with American power is not that it is American. The problem is simply the power. It would be dangerous even for an archangel to have so much power.’ Tim Garton Ash.

‘Stop this bullshit now.’ Cindy Sheehan.

George W’s Palace

While Bush’s Government builds what is purported to be the biggest diplomatic outpost on earth, Iraqi families suffer water shortages and power cuts and are forced to wait in line to fuel their cars.

Although $22 billion has been spent, Baghdad’s infrastructure still operates at pre-war levels. Out of 150 planned medical centres only six have been completed.

The failed $147 million programme to train Iraqi security units to protect key oil and power facilities is the subject of a current fraud investigation. Before the war oil production was 2.6 million barrels per day; now it is only 2.18 million.

As an astonishing catalogue of missed deadlines and overspending on civilian building projects is revealed, the bill, so far, for ‘George W’s palace’ stands at $592 million.

To add insult to injury the Kuwaiti contractor employs only foreign workers.

The 104 acre site, protected by a 15ft thick perimeter wall, will comprise 21 buildings, to include luxurious residences for the ambassador and his deputy, six apartments for senior officials, office accommodation for 8,000 staff, a super-sized swimming pool, an olympic class gymnasium, cinemas, tennis courts, US food chain restaurants and a top drawer American Club for evening functions.

And the USA retains ‘no long term ambitions’ here?

Not surprisingly the size of the project is seen by Iraqis as ‘an indication of who actually exercises power in their country’ (and of who will no doubt continue so to do).

Times article

I stumbled upon these words of wisdom from the fingertips of my good friend Mike E over at the Open Container Speedway:

‘If you want to understand why the end of the world is about to happen you really must watch Fox News. Make note of who advertises. Never buy their product again. And remember: For roughly 25% to a third of Americans what you see there is Truth. A mere market share. By no means a majority. But a brutally sizable & well-connected ignoramus mob.’

On 21 February 1965, Black Nationalist leader Malcolm X was assassinated.

The following is a short film by Liam Donovon featuring a recording of The Ballot or the Bullet speech, set to music by the film’s director.Malcolm X was born in Omaha in 1925 as Malcolm Little. His father, a Baptist minister, was an outspoken follower of Marcus Garvey, the Black Nationalist leader of the 1920s.

The family moved to Lansing, Michigan, and when Malcolm was six years old his father was murdered after receiving death threats from the Ku Klux Klan. Malcolm’s mother suffered a nervous breakdown and he and his eight siblings were taken into care by the welfare department.

He was sent first to a foster home and then to a reform school. After the eighth grade, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked at various jobs, eventually becoming involved in criminal activity. In 1946 he received a prison sentence for burglary.

Inside he became interested in the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Black Muslims, also known as The Nation of Islam. He subsequently spent his time in prison educating himself and learning more about the Black Muslims, who advocated racial separation.

On his release in 1952, he joined a Black Muslim temple in Detroit and changed his surname from Little to X, symbolically replacing the name derived from the heritage of slavery to represent the unknown name of his African ancestors.

By the early 1960s, the Nation of Islam had become well known and Malcolm was their most prominent spokesperson. In 1963, however, he was suspended from the organisation for his remark that the assassination of John F. Kennedy was like “the chickens coming home to roost”. In the following year, he broke with the Nation of Islam altogether and formed a secular black nationalist group, the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU).

In 1964 Malcolm made a hajj (pilgrimage) to the Islamic holy city of Mecca. As a result of this trip and other travels to Africa and Europe he adopted the Arabic name El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and renounced his previous teaching that all whites are evil.

He was assassinated by three Black Muslim members while addressing an OAAU rally in New York.

“I have a dream” video clip

This is the entire address. It lasts about 17 minutes. What else do you need to do that can’t wait?

Why am I proud not to be English?

Look, I don’t really give a f**k one way or the other but when the question begs an answer I guess it’s got a lot to do with the pride I feel about not ever having been fooled by the monarchy thing.

God save the Queen? What for, man? At school I sat down when they played the anthem.

Did you know that the Queen owns all the whales, dolphins, porpoises and sturgeons in the waters around the UK? That she has sat for 139 official portraits, opened 15 bridges, launched 23 ships and sent her first e-mail in 1976?

And were you aware that buried somewhere on the moon is a microfilmed message from the Queen addressed to any alien life forms who might come across it?

When Dennis Gear, born on the same day as the illustrious lady, went into Borocourt asylum at 16 because he was “unruly” they gave him a pair of wooden clogs, a tin plate, a mug and a spoon.

They didn’t have TV or radio so in the evening he and the other inmates would play games.

“For supper we had cocoa and rock cake,” Dennis told me. “In the afternoons we had a big dinner that was served through the hatch.”

Dennis ran away once but “a policeman caught me and brought me back.”

He was released from the hospital in 1984 having spent 40 years of his life there.

F**k the Queen; God save Dennis Gear. And don’t ever call me English.

Some time back, in a comment on someone else’s blog, I suggested a semi-tongue-in-cheek but arguably useful alternative to voting in an American election: “…revolution, possibly beginning with an assassination…”

I mentioned no names, of course, but it didn’t take much working out.

Because the comment could have been construed as incitement to commit an act of terrorism, and because everyone knows that the CIA monitor the web, it was removed.

Are they watching UK television too?

Take note of the phrase: and any leader who is oppressing the people.
